Transformative Agenda Programme for Women, Adolescents and Youth
The Transformative Agenda for Women, Adolescents and Youth in the Pacific Phase II - a AUD 37 million programme funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and implemented by UNFPA from May 2023-October 2027 - is a beacon of transformative change for women, young people and other marginalized groups in the Pacific region. Through a steadfast commitment to improving sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), with a special emphasis on family planning, this programme builds on the successes of Phase I (2018-2023).
How and where we work
Implemented across nine focus countries, namely Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu, UNFPA supports Governments and civil society partners to strengthen the supply and demand for sexual and reproductive (SRH) information and services. This is complemented by the creation of a favourable enabling environment, ensuring that everyone, especially those most left behind, can access these vital resources. The programme supports Governments to reach Sustainable Development Goal 3 on health, Goal 4 on education and Goal 5 on gender equality – and contributes in a variety of ways to achieving other Sustainable Development Goals.
The Transformative Agenda encompasses a holistic approach, which includes:
- Strengthening and expanding delivery of quality SRHR information and services in the nine priority countries;
- Promoting training and supervision systems to support sustainable, quality, rights-based SRH services;
- Increasing social acceptability and support for SRHR and family planning within communities, especially for contraceptive use;
- Integrating family life education in schools and communities to build knowledge and understanding of SRHR among young people;
- Helping to change legislation, public policy and programming to support universal SRHR;
- Increasing the availability, analysis and use of high-quality data to inform SRHR programming and policy.
The programme has a strong focus on five cross-cutting areas to accelerate transformative change:
- Using quality data and evidence to guide programmes and policy
- Ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of transformative change
- Fostering collaboration and synergies at both regional and country levels
- Boosting innovation and digitalisation to enhance the impact of the programme
- Increasing preparedness, resilience and adaptation in the face of evolving challenges
The Transformative Agenda Phase II is committed to driving progress, inclusivity, and sustained change for the women, young people and other marginalized groups UNFPA serves. Through strategic partnerships, this programme contributes towards a future where everyone has the freedom and ability to lead healthy lives, make their own informed decisions, and participate as equals in society and its development.
